Best Grease For Weight Distribution Hitch

Best Grease For Weight Distribution Hitch: 8 Options Compared

A strong choice for a weight distribution hitch should lubricate the specific contact points your hitch maker identifies, resist friction and wear, and suit your towing routine. The EQUALIZER 91-00-4250 High Performance Lubricant leads this group because it is the clearest match for Equal-i-zer hitch maintenance, with guidance recommending seasonal applications for an average camper. Several other products are labeled for trailer hitch balls, couplers, pins, or related towing hardware, so they may better suit those components than a hitch head or spring-bar contact surface.

This roundup compares eight options by their stated use, form, and package size. Check your hitch manual before applying any grease: the correct lubrication points and whether a particular product is appropriate can vary by hitch design.

The EQUALIZER High Performance Lubricant is the strongest fit in this selection for an Equal-i-zer weight distribution hitch. The manufacturer’s supplied guidance says proper lubrication helps keep the hitch running smoothly and extend the life of sockets and the hitch head; it suggests spring, midsummer, and fall applications for an average camper. For other hitch brands or components such as a tow ball, check the manual first: several alternatives here are specifically described as ball or trailer-hitch grease, not as universal weight distribution hitch lubricants.

  • Contains PTFE and anti-wear additives
  • Listed for metal surfaces and trailer applications
  • Application guidance includes cleaning before greasing
Cons
  • Its application directions require rust, old grease, and debris to be cleaned away first.

Lucas Red N Tacky Grease Cartridge

#7

7. Lucas Red N Tacky Grease Cartridge

  • Weight: 15.2 oz
  • Container Type: Cartridge
  • Form: Grease, Oil

Best for: Water-Resistant Grease Cartridge.

Why it ranks #7: The 14 oz cartridge is water resistant and described for automotive, agricultural, and industrial use, but not specifically for weight distribution hitches.

  • Water resistant
  • Long storage life
  • Rust and oxidation inhibitors
  • Resists spray-off and water washout
Cons
  • Cartridge format may require a compatible grease gun for dispensing.

Lucas Red N Tacky Grease

#8

8. Lucas Red N Tacky Grease

  • Weight: 16 oz
  • Container Type: Pail
  • Form: Grease, Oil

Best for: Bulk Tacky Grease Users.

Why it ranks #8: The 1 lb tub is a general-purpose grease with rust and oxidation inhibitors; the listing does not identify weight distribution hitch use.

Lucas Red ’N’ Tacky comes in a one-pound tub, offering a larger quantity of tacky grease for owners handling repeated lubrication jobs. Its description notes rust and oxidation inhibitors, resistance to spray-off and water washout, and mechanical stability under heavy loads.

The smooth, tacky complex grease is described as resisting water washout and spray-off, which supports use where exposure could displace lubricant. Rust and oxidation inhibitors add protection for mechanical parts, while the stated mechanical stability and ability to endure heavy loads suit demanding applications. The one-pound pail provides a tub format for keeping grease available across maintenance tasks. The supplied information describes broad grease properties, rather than listing hitch balls or weight-distribution hitch components specifically.

Pros
  • Tacky complex grease
  • Rust and oxidation inhibitors
  • Resists spray-off and water washout
  • Mechanical stability under heavy loads
Cons
  • The one-pound tub is a larger quantity than buyers seeking a small application supply may want.

Skip it if you need hitch-specific grease with listed compatibility for hitch balls and named trailer components; UniSport’s trailer hitch ball lubricant covers those uses.

This suits owners who use grease across repeated mechanical maintenance jobs and value water resistance and tackiness. The tub quantity is better matched to ongoing use than to someone seeking only a small, hitch-specific application.

Avoid greasing the wrong hitch contact point

The main application trap is assuming every part of a weight distribution hitch should receive the same grease. The listings distinguish trailer hitch balls, receivers, pins, couplers, and jacks, while the EQUALIZER guidance specifically mentions sockets and the hitch head. Those descriptions do not establish that one lubricant is suitable for every surface or friction point on every hitch design.

Applying grease where a manufacturer expects a dry friction surface could affect how that component works; this product data does not specify approved locations for other brands. Use the hitch manual to identify lubrication points and confirm the permitted lubricant before applying anything.

The ball-focused options may make sense for a coupler-and-ball connection, but their listings alone do not verify suitability for spring bars or other weight-distribution contact surfaces. Treat the product label and your hitch instructions as separate checks rather than relying on a broad “trailer hitch” description.

How to Choose Weight Distribution Hitch Grease

Match the grease to the contact point

Look first for a lubricant whose listed use matches the exact part you intend to lubricate. EQUALIZER’s supplied guidance names sockets and the hitch head, while Mission Automotive lists receiver hitches, gooseneck ball mounts, pins, couplers, and jacks. The 3-IN-ONE, UniSport, BTAS, and Calvana listings emphasize hitch balls or trailer-hitch hardware.

These differences matter because a ball lubricant is not automatically approved for a hitch’s other contact surfaces. If you own an Equal-i-zer hitch and are maintaining the stated points, favor the EQUALIZER product.

If you need grease for a ball, coupler, or pin, a product that names that component may be a closer match—but verify the hitch maker’s instructions first.

Choose a form and package size you can apply

Check the listed form and package size against how you maintain your hitch. This selection ranges from EQUALIZER’s 4-ounce liquid and Mission Automotive’s 4-ounce jar of grease to BTAS at 5 ounces, Calvana at 6 ounces, the 3-IN-ONE gel at 14.4 ounces, and Lucas products at 14 ounces or 1 pound. The listings also show a UniSport bottle and Lucas cartridge or pail, but do not provide an applicator compatibility claim.

A small package may suit occasional maintenance or a single hitch, while larger quantities may suit someone maintaining multiple items; the data does not establish how long any package lasts. Consider whether the listed form and container suit your intended application method.

Consider water and temperature claims

Compare stated resistance and temperature details only when they match your operating conditions. The 3-IN-ONE gel lists a range of -100°F to 500°F and says it helps prevent rust for up to one year; that makes its stated temperature range a distinguishing specification, not a guarantee for every hitch use. Mission Automotive and UniSport describe their greases as waterproof, while Lucas Red N Tacky is described as water resistant and resistant to spray-off and water washout.

BTAS describes a waterproofing step involving a rubber boot and NLGI #2 grease, so do not mistake that instruction for an independently specified waterproof rating for every application. Buyers towing in wet conditions may prioritize the water-related descriptions; those needing a temperature specification may prefer the 3-IN-ONE listing, subject to hitch-manual approval.

Which Grease Fits Your Weight Distribution Hitch?

For an Equal-i-zer hitch and the lubrication points named in its supplied guidance, choose EQUALIZER High Performance Lubricant first. If your immediate need is hitch-ball lubrication and your hitch manual permits it, 3-IN-ONE Trailer Hitch Gel Lube stands out for its stated -100°F to 500°F range, while Mission Automotive Ball Grease lists uses across pins, couplers, jacks, and receiver hitches. For a waterproof ball-and-receiver grease, consider UniSport Trailer Hitch Ball Lubricant; for a 6 oz, non-dripping option, consider Calvana Trailer Hitch Ball Grease.

BTAS is another ball-lubricant option with PTFE. The Lucas greases are general-purpose choices rather than hitch-specific listings, so they rank lower for this search.

Always confirm the approved product and grease points in your hitch manual before applying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which parts of a weight distribution hitch should be greased?

Grease only the points specified in your hitch manual. For an Equal-i-zer hitch, the supplied guidance identifies the sockets and hitch head as lubrication points. Other hitch designs may differ, so do not assume a ball lubricant or general-purpose grease is suitable for every moving part.

Can I use trailer ball grease on weight distribution hitch components?

Only if your hitch manual approves that product for the specific component. Several options here are described as ball or trailer-hitch grease, which does not establish that they are suitable for weight distribution hitch sockets or the hitch head. Check the product guidance and your hitch manual before applying.

How often should I lubricate a weight distribution hitch?

Follow the schedule in your hitch manual. For an average camper, the supplied Equal-i-zer guidance suggests applications in spring, midsummer, and fall. Conditions and hitch designs can differ, so use that schedule only where it matches your equipment’s instructions, and check the specified lubrication points.

How should I choose grease for a hitch brand other than Equal-i-zer?

Start with the hitch manufacturer’s manual and use a product approved for the exact parts you need to lubricate. The Equal-i-zer lubricant is the strongest fit for the Equal-i-zer hitch in this selection; alternatives described for balls or trailer hitches should not be treated as universal substitutes.

What should I do if I only need to lubricate the hitch ball?

Choose a ball lubricant only when your hitch manual permits it for the tow ball. This selection includes products described for ball lubrication, including 3-IN-ONE Trailer Hitch Gel Lube, UniSport, BTAS, and Calvana. Confirm the permitted product and application point in your manual before use.

Final Words

For an Equal-i-zer weight distribution hitch, choose EQUALIZER High Performance Lubricant first and apply it only at the points named in the supplied guidance. For other brands, let the hitch manual determine the approved grease and lubrication points. If you need ball grease, compare products specifically described for that purpose, but do not assume they suit hitch sockets or the hitch head.

Check the manual before applying any lubricant.
